About The Event

Please join me, Representative Deb Butler and Senator Vickie Sawyer on Tuesday, June 11th, from 12:00-1:00pm, in Rm 421, Legislative Office Building for informative scientific presentations regarding 1) “Evidence for unmonitored coal ash spills in Sutton Lake, North Carolina: Implications for contamination of lake ecosystems,” and 2) “Thyroid Cancer Rates Across North Carolina: Are Environmental Exposures Playing A Role?

Presenters will include:

Dr. Avner Vengosh, Professor of Geochemistry and Water Quality, Duke University Nicholas School of Environment

Dr. Heather Stapleton, Associate Professor of Environmental Health, Duke University Nicholas School of Environment

Mr. Kemp Burdette, Cape Fear River Keeper

This will provide a history of Sutton Lake as well as a scientific based, peer reviewed presentation and should be helpful to

legislators in better understanding the concerns surrounding coal ash management and storage, as well as related environmental and human health issues.
